Looking for ways to entertain the kids over the school holidays? Or new ideas to freshen up your outdoor learning provision. Here's some low cost ideas that all ages will enjoy!

1) Water bottle bird feeders
Make use of your rubbish!
Use old water bottles to make DIY bird feeders for your garden or school grounds. A full method can be found here: How to make a bird feeder | Natural History Museum
A great school holiday craft or class DT project. Make and hang your bird feeder, watch the birds come in and see how it copes with regular use! Does it need to be stronger? More waterproof? Harder for the seed to fall out?
2) Tracks & signs collage
Level up your walk or day out in nature.
Look out signs that animals have used the same paths and routes as you.
Can you find any feathers? What birds might they have belonged to?
Are there any tracks in the mud, sand or snow? What animal are they from? What direction were they going in?
Are there any mole hills? Where might the mole be now? (which mole hill looks the most freshly dug up)
You could make a collage of photos or drawings of your findings and the animals they belong to.
3) Pebble art
Leave treasure for others to enjoy!
Next time you are at the beach (or anywhere else you can find stones!), collect a couple of round pebbles to decorate. You could paint your rocks, or draw on them with sharpies or crayons.
Then leave your pebbles for others to find. You might just put a smile on someone's face as they spot a pebble ladybird in the woods or a pebble rainbow in your front garden.
4) Nature pictures
A child led activity ideal for independent play or forest school provision.
Recreate a famous artwork, animal, art style or simply create something new using natural materials.
All you need are the natural craft supplies found all around you - sticks, stones, leaves, pine cones, feathers and anything else they can collect. Then let their imagination run wild and see what they can create.
